We spoke with YMZ Cairo about the ideas behind their collections, the role of craftsmanship in their process, and how they continue to shape a brand grounded in heritage while remaining relevant to the way women dress today.
WHAT INSPIRED THE CREATION OF YMZ CAIRO IN 2015?
YMZ Cairo was born to merge Egyptian craftsmanship, particularly hand embroidery, with a bold, statement-driven aesthetic. At the time, we felt there was a gap for pieces that carried heritage but could still fit seamlessly into everyday life. Rooted in both Egyptian and Italian influences, it began as a small atelier and evolved into a brand centered on storytelling through clothing.
HOW DO EGYPT’S TEXTILE TRADITIONS SHAPE YOUR DESIGN PHILOSOPHY?
Egyptian textiles are very expressive and rooted in craftsmanship, especially through embroidery, and that’s a big part of how we design. We don’t see embroidery as a small detail—it’s the main element. It’s what gives each piece its identity, whether it’s a word or a symbol, keeping the spirit of Egyptian craftsmanship at the center of every piece.
HOW CENTRAL IS HANDCRAFT AND EMBROIDERY TO YOUR COLLECTIONS?
It’s at the core of everything we do. Handcraft and embroidery aren’t added elements—they define each piece and give YMZ its unique identity. We also give our customers the freedom to customize their embroidery, so each piece can reflect something personal—whether that’s a feeling, a name, or a story.

A defining moment for us was when clients began returning and building a relationship with the brand - not just buying once, but really connecting with it over time.
